As part of a Limited Run Games showcase, it's been revealed the classic PS1 platformer Tomba! is being ported to PS5 and PS4. Using the publisher's Carbon Engine, it'll use a new soundtrack from Fujita Harumi, who composed the original back in 1997. With a digital version for the PS Store announced alongside a physical edition from Limited Run Games, check out the trailer above.
The company PR reveals: "Our favorite pink-haired, high-jumping jungle boy is back! We're working with creator Tokuro Fujiwara to bring the beloved platformer Tomba to modern consoles via the Carbon Engine, with a new soundtrack by the legendary Fujita Harumi."

Yes! Iโve been wanting this on modern consoles for the longest time.
Yay! Loved this!
I've been fascinated by Tomba ever since I saw Caddicarus talk about it all those years ago, super excited to finally experience it!
First GEX, now Tombi? Have I woken up in 97 or something?
The more games brought forward the better
So I guess this blocks the ps1 classic version from ever getting released on the 4/5
Holy crap!
@IndoorEnthusiast Seemingly (and very surprisingly) not!
'With a digital version for the PS Store announced alongside a physical edition from Limited Run Games'
Hell yeah that's awesome!
I remember renting this from Blockbuster as a kid but never getting the chance to finish it but always wanted to play again. Looking forward to bringing back some nostalgia
N.i.c.e. tomba is a classic.word up son
Hopefully they are planning on fixing some of the more annoying things, like the flower quest and the medals.
We swimming in classics. Great announcements today.
Some nice announcements today.
That is awesome news. I've wanted to get this for a while but it's so expensive. I hope 2 isn't far away.
Got both games on my Vita so it's a pass from me. But a welcome surprise nonetheless.
@get2sammyb @LiamCroft I'd be wary of LRG's claim of a digital release. Deathwish Enforcers (a Sunset Riders inspired indie shmup but set in the 80's),was released on the U.S. PSN store back in April & remains unavailable in other PSN Store regions to this day.
Despite a promise on a preview LRG livestream by the now departed co-founder,nothing has been done to widen it U.S. only release. Though only physically published by them, similar thing with Night Trap Anniversary Edition getting a U.S. only digital release afaik.
Might get some better luck if Push Square asks them, but they completely ignore social media posts asking about Deathwish Enforcers.
They claim to support the "litte indies" with limited physical runs of a couple thousand copies & overpriced international shipping, but only digitally published Deathwish Enforcers to the U.S. psn region thus limiting its subsequent sales?
Pretty strange way to "support" small indie devs?!๐ค
Thats great that we are getting a port, but why alter the soundtrack?
The name tomba and the characters look familiar, but I don't remember from where.
i still have the old Tomba game digitally for my Playstation 3 and PSP. Tried playing the game a year and half ago when the Playstation 3 PSN store was still around.
trying to figure out how to solve some of beginning "puzzles" are still a little confusing to do
One of the first PS1 games I ever played, what a great nostalgia trip I'm feeling right now.๐
Yesss! Wouldโve loved a remaster - but this will do. Tomba (fun it was named Tombi here in Denmark - and rest of Europe maybe?), was one of the first ever games I ever saw as a child. Looking forward to this.
Yes! Now we just need Alundra.
Oh my god this is amazing. I have the original PS1 in its case.
ARE. YOU. KIDDING ME?
I feel like I'm living a dream! This is one of my favourite games ever released. It holds such a special place in my heart that I'm definitely buying the physical edition (though I've gone full digital lately). I played it again on psvita a few years ago and it felt amazing, but it's wonderful to own an actual copy of it. Such fond memories of it...
Tomba 2 is one of my fave platformers!
@AgentMantis Alundra would be lovely, albeit again LRG's digital release record outside of its native US PSN region has been lousy!๐
Would've settled for Alundra to come to the PS Classics Deluxe/Premium range given Sony seem uninterested or unwilling to pursue a PS2 emulation on ps5!
Sadly noted Alundra was quietly deleted off the EU/AU PS3 PSN store where it was published by Psygnosis so not sure where its IP rights belong to! ๐ค
One thing Iโve noticed recently about current generation consoles is this sudden deluge of โretroโ titles which is fine if weโre talking the likes of, say, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro but less so when a quick glimpse at the trailer seems to confirm that by โretroโ they actually mean โyes, itโs a bit crap but thatโs the intention, see?โ
Not that Iโm against all these rereleases and reimaginings but as someone who bought a PS5 with the hopes Iโd be playing games that were even better, even prettier and even bigger than last generation games there are way too many cheap, naff, โeasy Platinumโ games alongside what looks like an entire archive of basic 8 Bit knockoffs. Remake and remaster arenโt the same thing so either do one or the other and donโt advertise with a CG trailer that has zero gameplay footage because in reality the game looks ***** โฆ
โฆ. and yes, that applies to AAA games too!
Oh wow Iโd totally forgotten about this game. I once won a drawing competition for this game for a long-defunct gaming magazine in my country!
Who are Limited Run games? They seem to be responsible for Tomba, Gex and Clocktower remasters. Are they working on other stuff?
@Fizza i wouldn't use limited run games to order anything if someone paid me, again, they shoehorn everything physical to their site and there is no option to buy this anywhere else apart from scalpers who are the ones 1st who will grab this before the people who want this on disc can get get their hands on it, i want to see how this "engine" is because this video doesn't tell you much as it's just a FMV trailer and how much it improves it, and why did they change the soundtrack? the original is just fine as is? playing this game by "other means" is basically the same thing? i'm not sure why anyone would grab this apart from achievements i guess
if actual gameplay is considerably different then maybe i will give it a chance
@Arnna they are a terrible company and there is many cases online of them ripping off customers often, stay away from them
@itsfoz i had my original copy but lost it years ago, the demo was neat back then too ๐
This kinda sucks sadly... Was hoping Sony would put this out as a Classic title for $9.99. I'm not paying LRG $50+ for this, nor their Digital release on PSN for a similar price.
Tombi was a fun game. I still have the original. Gex 3D too.
@AgentMantis The first Alundra on modern consoles would be great. The physical version is $$$. Go Pack!
I played this demo over and over annnnd over as I could never find the full game. Cannot wait
@Arnna As much as YouTube can feel like going down the rabbit hole at times, seen a couple of interesting ones well researched about LRG & its business model.
Moreso have a buddy that ordered through them & no longer does. I was tempted to order Deathwish Enforcers, but kept believing I'd save buying it digitally only to subsequently find it confined to the US PSN Store,& it's out of the devs hands as LRG are the publisher!
Back to LRG,my buddy told me shipping to Down under,(where we both live),is near the amount of the individual game you order....moreso they push insurance & extra "protective" packing as extras over the base high postal rates. Their twitter & other places have several stories of games going MIA & their response especially if not insured lacklustre to ignoring them.
Not to mention games arriving with the disc loose & thus having been potentially scratched during postage,or the case damaged etc. Factors that led me not to ordering Deathwish Enforcers & seemingly would need to setup a U.S. Account which I'm a touch wary about.
Not directly published but I believe funded by them was the Night Trap Anniversary port only again available on US but not EU/AU PSN afaik.
In short they control the distribution chain & create a fear of missing out model to drive paying their inflated shipping which may or may not reach you!๐
Not exactly living up to their "we love indies & preservation!",mantra!๐
@SAMTYLER1974 We may have to learn to be happy with such releases for a while, as Sony throws its weight behind Live Service games.
One of the greatest platform puzzlers from back in the day! I used to love just jumping on things and biting them (still do! ๐) - and the humour was on point!
@AgentMantis along with Vagrant Story. Ape Escape trilogy. Hogs of war. Crash bash. Soul reaver. Blood omen. Legacy of kain defiance. Sly and so many other games too
@Enuo this will be a remaster
@TeapotBuddha ah Damn, thatโs interesting - didnโt know that was the reason.
